Have dense breasts? Canadian experts have something important to say.
Canadian Society of Breast Imaging (CSBI) has just published updated recommendations in the Journal of Breast Imaging on supplemental screening for women with dense breasts.
Canadian experts reviewed the evidence, including the benefits and limitations of supplemental imaging, and made this recommendation:
Here’s how CSBI ranks the imaging for screening dense breasts:
CSBI also acknowledges the barriers to implementing supplemental screening- barriers that governments must address so that supplemental screening is available to improve early detection and outcomes for women with dense breasts.
Please read the position statement as you may wish to bring the CSBI recommendations to your next primary care provider visit. Some providers may not realize that dense breast tissue increases risk and lowers detection rates.
In ON, BC, AB, and NWT, you can request a requisition for additional screening, and take it to the clinic of your choice but if you live in a province where supplemental screening is not accessible:
DBC has sharing the CSBI position paper with health ministries across the country, but we need your help.
Please share the CSBI recommendations with your MLA, MPP, MNA, MHA and simply ask why Canadian expert guidance for women with dense breasts is not being implemented. The screening you need should not depend on your postal code.
